With the cold seasons upon us, you and your family will likely be spending more time indoors. That means you can finally catch up on your decluttering tasks and get your home ready for the holidays.
Here are some tips for a stress-free way to spruce up your home.
- Create a checklist
List down the key tasks you need to complete to get the job done. Be as thorough as you can and consider breaking down tasks per room. This will help make sure you’ve done everything you set out to do. Plus, checking off items on your list, no matter how small the task, can be a great motivator and inspire you to push on.
- Do it one step at a time
You don’t need to declutter a room in just one day. You can start with one section of the room, such as your bedroom closets, then move on to the chest of drawers, and so on. By breaking down the job into smaller tasks, you can avoid feeling overwhelmed or ending up with stuff scattered all over the place. This will also help you see what you’ve completed for the day and give you a sense of accomplishment.
- Make room in your closet for cold weather clothes
If this is not yet part of your fall or winter routine, it’s time to start organizing your closet so you get easy access to your winter clothes. This can make dressing up easier while keeping your closet neat and organized. Sorting through your clothes also gives you the perfect opportunity to edit your wardrobe and get rid of items you don’t need or will likely not wear again.
- Organize your spring/summer clothing and shoes
As you make room and organize your winter clothes and shoes, you can declutter your summer stuff, as well. Have bins and containers ready for them when you sort out your closet. Get rid of items that have outlived their usefulness, and have all the remaining pieces cleaned before storing and tucking them away until spring.
- Declutter your décor
When you take down your fall decors to replace them with holiday trimmings, you can also take the chance to declutter them. Go through each item and ask yourself if you would be using them again. Perhaps some are now outdated, or your tastes have changed and you want a new look for next year. Or there could be pieces that you’ve hardly used in several years. Set aside the items that you think should be retired and find a way to dispose of them. Do the same for your holiday decorations when you take them down.
- Organize your kitchen
The holidays often mean having guests over and spending plenty of time in the kitchen preparing meals for everyone. Get ready for the busy season ahead by organizing your kitchen. Store items according to their function and how they’re often used. For example, you can put all baking tools and implements together in one place, entertaining pieces like trays and platters in another, and so on. This will not only help improve movement around the kitchen but make entertaining and preparing meals for guests less stressful.
